Summer deep clean in Edmonton: what changes when it warms up

Summer deep cleaning differs from the spring or fall version in Edmonton — pollen, open windows, and patio grime change the priorities. The 5 zones that matter most from June to August.

TL;DR

Edmonton summers are short and dusty: tree pollen peaks in June, wildfire smoke is a near-annual visitor by August, and open windows blow road dust onto every horizontal surface. The summer deep clean focuses on screens, sills, vents, soft furnishings, and patio-adjacent rooms.

A summer deep clean isn't a smaller version of the spring one — it's a different set of priorities. Spring is about clearing six months of winter; summer is about staying ahead of pollen, smoke and outdoor traffic.

The 5 zones that change in summer

  1. Window screens and sills — pollen accumulates here weekly from June. Vacuum, then wipe with damp microfibre.
  2. HVAC vents and return grilles — fresh-air mode pulls dust through the system; filter changes go from quarterly to monthly.
  3. Soft furnishings — sofas, throws, area rugs absorb pollen. Vacuum upholstery thoroughly, beat or wash washable items.
  4. Entry mats and patio-adjacent floors — outdoor grime tracks in 3-4× faster than in winter. Daily quick mop, weekly deep mop.
  5. Bedding — humidity bumps dust-mite activity. Wash sheets at 60°C weekly, pillow protectors monthly.

When wildfire smoke arrives

Edmonton has had at least one significant smoke event each summer since 2021. When AQHI exceeds 7, close windows, run HVAC on recirculate, and skip vacuuming for 24-48 hours — vacuums kick fine particulates back into the air. Wet-wipe instead. Replace HVAC filter immediately after the event clears.

Many clients combine a summer deep clean with a window-screen pass — call ahead so the team brings the right tools.

Frequently asked

More on this topic

Is a summer deep clean really necessary if I had spring deep clean?
For most homes, no — recurring maintenance handles summer. But households with pets, allergy sufferers, or near-arterial roads benefit from a mid-summer reset (late July / early August).
Do you clean during heat waves?
Yes, but we adjust start times to early morning and lighten physical tasks during the peak afternoon hours. Your home stays at a comfortable temperature throughout.
How do you handle smoke residue specifically?
Dry-method (vacuum + microfibre) for hard surfaces; soft furnishings get a HEPA-vacuum pass plus enzyme spray. Smoke smell sometimes needs a second visit a week later as residues reactivate with humidity.
Should I close windows during cleaning?
Yes — outside air during pollen/smoke season undoes the work. We open briefly only for cross-ventilation when bleach or ammonia-based products are used (rarely; eco-products are our default).
