Removing pet hair from sofas and rugs: 6 methods, ranked

Edmonton households with shedding pets fight an endless battle with hair on soft furnishings. The 6 methods that work, ranked by effort vs effectiveness.

By Ukrainian Elite Cleaning

TL;DR

Rubber-glove method beats every other technique by 2-3× for pet hair on upholstery. Lint roller is the slowest. Pumice stone works on carpet but not fabric. A good vacuum with a motorised brush gets the second-best result. The rest are situational.

If you have a Golden, a Lab, a Husky, or a long-haired cat, you know: standard vacuuming leaves more hair than it picks up. Six methods, tested across an Edmonton clean of 12 households over a year.

The 6 methods ranked

  1. Rubber gloves (damp), drag across fabric — 9/10 effectiveness, $0 cost, 5 min for a sofa. Hair clumps and lifts off. Best method by far.
  2. Vacuum with motorised brush attachment — 7/10, ~$60 attachment if you don't have it, 8 min for a sofa. Loud but reliable.
  3. Damp microfibre cloth, wipe in one direction — 7/10, $5, slower than gloves but works on fabrics gloves snag.
  4. Pumice stone (carpet only — NOT upholstery) — 8/10 on carpet, $4, 15 min per room. Don't use on fabric — it shreds.
  5. Lint roller — 5/10, $8 per roll, painfully slow. Useful for tiny areas, not full furniture.
  6. Specialty pet-hair brushes (FurZapper, ChomChom) — 7/10, $20-30, equivalent to gloves but tidier (hair collects in the device).

The science of why gloves win

Pet hair carries a static charge. Rubber gloves dampened with water create the opposite charge, so hair lifts onto the glove instead of staying buried in the fabric. Lint rollers rely on adhesive — they work but each strip captures only a thin top layer.

Prevention beats removal

  • Brush pets outside daily during shedding season (April-May, October-November in Edmonton)
  • Wash pet bedding weekly at 60°C
  • Use a throw or washable cover on the favourite sofa spot
  • HVAC filter — bump from MERV 8 to MERV 11 if you have heavy shedders

Every standard recurring clean for pet households uses the glove method on a designated couch or chair. We bring our own gloves and dispose of the collected hair on-site.

Frequently asked

More on this topic

Will pet hair damage my vacuum?
Yes if it wraps around the brush roller. Cut hair off the roller every 2-3 vacuum sessions for shedding-household vacuums. The hair lift will improve dramatically.
Does fabric softener really repel pet hair?
Marginally. Dilute 1 part softener in 3 parts water in a spray bottle, light mist on fabric, wipe with microfibre. Works for 1-2 days. Not a substitute for the glove method.
What about hair embedded in wool rugs?
Pumice stone is the gold standard. Vacuum first, then drag a pumice stone across the surface in 30cm sections. Lifts embedded hair without damaging fibres.
Are eco-friendly cleaners safe for pets afterwards?
Plant-based cleaners are safer than chemical ones, but you should still wait until surfaces are fully dry before pets contact them. We default to eco products for exactly this reason.
