How often should you hire professional house cleaners?

Weekly, biweekly, monthly, or one-off — which professional cleaning frequency actually fits your home? The 4-question test that decides it.

By Ukrainian Elite Cleaning

TL;DR

Frequency depends on four things: household size, pets, work-from-home pattern, and how tidy you keep things between visits. Biweekly is the modal answer for Edmonton households (60-65% of recurring clients). Weekly suits families with 3+ residents or shedding pets; monthly works for solo professionals who keep things tidy day-to-day.

Most clients call us with a guess ("probably biweekly?") and we end up agreeing — but the right answer for your home depends on four specifics, not a default.

The 4-question test

  1. How many people live in the home? 1-2 = monthly may work. 3+ = biweekly minimum. 5+ = weekly.
  2. Pets that shed? Heavy shedders (Golden, Husky, Lab) push you up one tier in frequency.
  3. Work-from-home? Yes = up one tier. Home gets used 16 hours/day instead of 4.
  4. Do you tidy daily (dishes done nightly, surfaces clear)? Yes = down one tier. Tidy homes need less cleaner-time.

Modal answers by household

  • Solo professional, no pets, downtown condo: monthly (~$120/visit)
  • Couple, no kids, one dog: biweekly (~$140/visit)
  • Family of 4, one cat: biweekly (~$180-220/visit)
  • Family of 5+, multiple pets: weekly (~$150/visit, less per visit because team gets faster)
  • Empty-nest couple, downsized condo: monthly or every 5-6 weeks

Common mistakes

Booking monthly when biweekly is what fits. Each visit takes longer (and costs more in total over the year) because dirt re-accumulates between visits. The math: 12 monthly cleans at 4 hours each = 48 hours/year. 26 biweekly cleans at 2 hours each = 52 hours/year — similar total time, but each visit is more pleasant and the home is more consistently presentable.

If unsure, start with biweekly for 2-3 visits and adjust. Our standard recurring clean has no frequency commitment — switch up or down anytime.

Frequently asked

More on this topic

Can I do weekly with deep cleans every 6 months?
Yes — this is what recurring families typically do. Weekly maintenance + biannual deep is the cleanest pattern.
Is monthly really enough for a family of 4?
Rarely. Bathrooms and kitchens build up too fast at that frequency. Most monthly-family clients ask to step up after 2-3 months.
What if my home is in great shape — can I just book quarterly?
Yes, but quarterly is closer to a deep clean each time (each visit is 4-6 hours instead of 2). Some clients prefer this; the math is similar.
Is there a minimum frequency for recurring discounts?
Monthly is our minimum for the recurring rate. Less frequent than that, each visit is priced as a one-off.
